KRLN History

In 1946, Raymond M. Beckner and Melvin B. Williams applied for and were granted a license from the FCC to begin broadcast operations in Cañon City, CO. Construction on the new building on Central Ave. was completed around Aug. 1, 1947. On August 15th, 1947, KRLN-AM went on the air.

In 1965, Norton Warner, principal of Warner Corporation, purchased KRLN. And in 1975, KRLN-FM (now KSTY) took to the airways.

KRLN has always placed an emphasis on strong local news and sports coverage. In addition to numerous AP news awards received over the years, we're also proud of our Lions Clubs benefits, various Radio-thons, Kite-flying contests, local High School sporting events, and anything that's community-driven.

In the summer of 1975, construction on a new facility began. In October of that year, the station moved from the original 700 sq. ft. building to a spaceous 3,600 sq. ft. facility at 1615 Central Ave., where it is today!

In April of 1999 a new tower for KSTY Star Country was erected atop Locke Mountain. The power increase gave Penrose, Florence, and some Pueblo West residents much better reception.

Today, in 2024, KRLN/KSTY is owned and operated by Royal Gorge Broadcasting, LLC. (a Warner corporation), broadcasting from 1615 Central Ave. in Cañon City.

Special thanks to the Cañon Daily Record, the Florence Citizen, and the History Museum for supplying some great historical information.
